NVQ 3 Electrical Maintenance Performance Units
The NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Maintenance is completed in your own time using our e-Portfolio system, OneFile. Your assessor will also carry out remote on-site assessments with you and these assessments will contribute towards the completion of this NVQ. This means that you can complete this NVQ as quickly as you wish providing you have the necessary evidence to do so.
The qualification consists of seven units and each unit needs to be complete over three separate occasions. This can be any number of jobs/tasks and does not necessarily mean three separate jobs or three separate locations. The additional unit 399 (AM2) needs to be covered only on one occasion and this is a three day practical assessment taken at an AM2 Centre anywhere in the UK.

NVQ 2356-99 Performance Units 301 - 304 and 309 to 311
Unit 301: Ensure Site Safe Working.
This unit is about assessing the site for hazards prior to, during and on completion of work on electro-technical systems. *AM2 counts as one of the three occasions for this unit.
Unit 302: Diagnose and Correct Electrical Faults.
This unit is about ensuring the safe identification of faults and correcting the faults by using safe and approved methods. *AM2 counts as one of the three occasions for this unit.
Unit 303: Provide Technical and Functional Information.
This unit is about supplying technical and functional information accurately on appropriate occasions or at handover with the right amount of detail bearing in mind the level of awareness of the recipient of the information.
Unit 304: Maintain a Safe and Healthy Working Environment.
This unit is about maintaining a healthy and safe working environment and working in compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. *AM2 counts as one of the three occasions for this unit.
Unit 309: Prepare to maintain electrical systems and equipment.
This unit is about preparing to maintain electrical systems and equipment and confirming that your work, tools, plant and materials meet requirements and that the working conditions are safe for work to commence.
Unit 310: Maintain electrical systems and equipment.
This unit is about correctly following agreed procedures when carrying out maintenance activities on electrical systems and equipment.
Unit 311: Inspect, test and commission maintained electrotechnical systems and equipment.
This unit is about carrying out the process of inspecting, testing and commissioning maintained electrotechnical systems and equipment in a safe manner and in the correct sequence to comply with the latest Industry Standards and regulations. *AM2 counts as one of the three occasions for this unit.
Each of the above units need to be completed over three separate occasions with the exception of units 301, 302, 304 and 311*.

This is a three day practical assessment taken at an AM2 centre. This unit is designed to enable learners to demonstrate ‘Electrotechnical occupational competence’ in accordance with approved industry practices and the current statutory and non-statutory regulations. Candidates will need to complete the AM2 in order to successfully complete the NVQ 2356-99.

How much experience do I need to have to become eligible for the NVQ 2356-99?
The mature candidate assessment route is for operatives who have over five years experience as a a practicing maintenance electrician.
What qualifications must I have already achieved for the NVQ 2356-99?
Ideally you should have successfully achieved relevant technical certificates such as one of the following; 236 part 1, 236 part 2, 2360 level 2, 2360 level 3, 2351 level 3, 2330 level 2, 2330 level 3. Other UK based qualifications (such as BTEC, NC/HNC etc.) may also be taken into consideration against the underpinning knowledge requirements of the award.
I have more than five years experience but my qualifications from outside of the UK. Am I still eligible for the NVQ 2356-99?
All non UK qualifications must have been fully evaluated by UK Naric. Candidates with qualifications gained outside the UK will need to meet the same requirements as any candidate following this assessment route. Candidate may be required to achieve qualifications in the IET Wiring Regulations (BS7671) and/or Inspection & Testing.
Do I need to complete the AM2?

How long will it take me to complete the NVQ 3 Electrical Maintenance Performance Units?
You can quite easily complete the NVQ between three to eight months using the e-Portfolio system and our remote videoconferencing system. The NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Maintenance is completed in your own time using our e-Portfolio system, OneFile. You need to cover EACH of the eight units on three SEPARATE occasions by completing site diaries for each unit. The AM2 counts as one occasion for units 301, 302, 304 and 311 meaning that these units (301, 302, 304 & 311) only need to be covered on two occasions. This means that you can complete this NVQ as quickly as you wish providing you have the necessary evidence to do so.
How many site diaries will I need to complete on the e-Portfolio?
We would encourage you to complete a site diary for each of the seven units on one occasion. This can be from one job or a number of different jobs. You will need to collect evidence and your assessor will advise what evidence you need to collect. Each site diary should take you no longer than one hour to complete and your assessor will provide you with feedback, advice and guidance on the site diaries you have submitted.
How many on-site assessments will I have?
You will receive two on-site assessments using our vidoeconferencing system. This is where we carry out an assessment of your competency in your place of work and record this evidence within our system. This evidence contributes towards the completion of your NVQ so the more evidence that is available during these on-site assessments, the less evidence you need to collect yourself.
To date, our quickest completion has been done in less than three months (see testimonials) but on average we would advise a realistic target of between four to six months due to your outside commitments and working hours. Of course, if you have more time to give and the relevant evidence then this can be achieved much quicker. It is entirely up to you how fast you complete this NVQ 3 in Electrical Maintenance due to the flexibility of completing this in the comfort of your own home.
How does the videoconferencing system work?
You will need to have an android or iPhone and be working in an area where you have a reliable signal on your phone or connected to a wireless network. We will plan the assessment with you beforehand so you know exactly what the assessor is looking for and what you need to demonstrate. We send you a text message and you simply click on the message and you are in the conference. We simply observe you within your place of work, carry out a professional discussion and provide you with feedback.
